Strategies Used by the Writers in the Three Rhetorical Modes

Strategies Used by the Writers to Communicate with their Readers (Unit Three)

In the three pieces of writing presented, the writers use various strategies to communicate with their readers. In the narrative piece, the writer recreates the events for the reader by providing extended details. He is very detailed about the trip on the train, how he feels and about how he feels about certain individuals- like Alina. He also provides lengthy details which provide insight into the characters of certain individuals. The writer is able to weave the details in such a way that the reader actually has a sense of being in the story. The writer provides details of his route from Victoria Station to Poplar to such an extent that the reader actually feels that he is also taking that route.

The writer was also able to successfully generalize the feelings of West Indians living in England, and therefore the reader, who may or may not be a West Indian, but may have been a foreigner many times in various countries can relate to the feelings of alienation.

In Lou;s Place – which is a descriptive essay, the writer created a vivid picture by appealing to the senses of the reader. Descriptions of smells of hamburger permeating the air, and smells of roasts for the nest day help the reader create the atmosphere of the place. The writer also provided many spatial- order descriptions which helped the reader form an accurate picture of how the rooms at Lou’s place were arranged.

Through the expository piece, the writer was able to communicate with the reader by giving information about the advantages and disadvantages of the World Wide Web in Education. His information was presented in such a way as to cause the reader to think critically about whether and how he would use the world wide as a student or a teacher.
